Hegedüs, R. (2016). Numbers – proportions – patterns in the case of disadvantaged people enrolled in higher education. Modern Geográfia, 11(3), 1–14.

In this study we try to examine the law changes of 2013 which affected the disadvantaged students’ situation in higher education. We would like to observe the changing’s affects on disadvantaged tudents’ numbers and rates. We would like to know where the disadvantaged students are concentrated in Hungary and we analyze the higher education institutions and sites of institutions as well.We examined the admission databases of 2013 and 2014 in the study and we made analyses with SPSS program then we created maps of the results using MapInfo program. These maps can help us to notice the territorial differences – most of the cases we show absolute numbers and ratio of students. The results show that the number and ratio of disadvantaged students decreased significantly between 2013 and 2014. The most disadvantaged areas are the Northeastern- Eastern parts of the country and a few smaller areas of the Southern Transdanubia region. The ratio of disadvantaged students has increased in some parts of Hungary. It is quite interesting that this increase mostly weltered in the most developed parts of the country. Most of the disadvantaged students study at the University of Debrecen – it is the reason why the increase is the biggest here. The location of the institutions has an effect on the number of disadvantaged students: if the institution is situated close to a disadvantaged area we believe that the number of disadvantaged student will be higher. We think that the disadvantaged students choose closer institutions when they decide where they want to study after middle school. It is the reason why the biggest ratio of disadvantaged students can be found at Sárospatak, Debrecen and Nyíregyháza Universities.
