A large increase in headcount which took place in the last decade has given a new impetus to educational geography researches in Hungarian higher education. Today, hundreds of thousands of students are studying in the country’s colleges and universities, thus forming a sharp competition among the institutions. As the most popular courses are available at the country’s more and more points, geographical distance plays an increasingly important role in the applicants’ institution selection, thus increasing the importance of catchment area studies. The present study examines the changes in the catchment area of the University of Pécs between 2004 and 2013, trying to find out how the students’ headcount changed comparing the two years’ data, and how were the country’s different areas and settlements affected by these changes.
